Local search may not get respect in the SEO world, but it will be the key to making money in the future. Whether a company is big or small, local, regional, national or multi-national, the ability to rank high in geo-vertical search is paramount. Shop Local!

Nice article. It just might be that general seo conversation is a weak place to discuss local seo. It might just be that the discussions are very in local advertising agencies and metro advertising associations around the country. I used to interact with agency professionals in my metro region long before the web. I'm going to do so again to see if local search is a topic of interest.

It gets no respect in the seo world but....it might have validity in other sectors. It should!!

Tim. That is great that your web clients are "sucking up" the navigational traffic of others. What a great competitive advantage.

I have one site that has been doing that for a while. What an added benefit. I referenced the article at seorefugee.com/forums for further comments and to get insights from others. Feel free to join the conversations.

Its one thing to have web visibility. Then its another to have comprehensive coverage wherein you are attracting navigational traffic that should be going to a different business.

You are right more businesses need to get on the web and then they need to do so effectively.

Oh yeah....talking about capturing navigational traffic. There was a killer description of that situation that was discussed at both refugee and in Mike's blog around Christmas time. It came out of the complaints in Google groups for business owners from a Denver florist who had a key traffic phrase controlled by a competitor.

Its actually a terrific example of navigational traffic considerations.

Thanks for the mention Larry. I was really struck by how many folks were unable to find the site they were looking for and ended up on these 2. As I said, I think it is crucial that small business owners understand this.

For an awful lot of small businesses, referrals are their bread and butter, and they are being gobbled up by web-savvy competitors.
